History Today
I'm very excited that my article on early 19th-century Luso-Brazilian history has been published in the June 2011 issue of History Today. I enjoyed writing the piece and I had the good fortune of giving an early version of it in February as a public lecture at Wesleyan University, my alma mater. The article in History Today is entitled "Empire of Exceptions: The Making of Modern Brazil".

Baltimore
I've just moved to Baltimore to take up a job in the Department of History at The Johns Hopkins University.
I am teaching two courses this semester. The first is a survey course on the Portuguese and Spanish empires in the early modern period (roughly, 1400-1800). The second is a seminar on late eighteenth-century European and Atlantic history.

2 new publications
It has been a busy yet enjoyable summer in Cambridge, MA. Two of my pieces were published in the last month or so. The first is a review of J.R. McNeill's Mosquito Empires
which appeared in the T.L.S. The second is an article concerning Portuguese debates on empire after the independence of Brazil (covering the period 1820-1850). This article may be found in the Fall 2011 issue of the Journal of Colonialism and Colonial History.

First post of the year
I've been slow to maintain this site, but I've resolved to be more diligent in 2010.
I only have two new articles to mention.
The first is a review of an excellent new, accessible biography of Salazar (the first quality biography to have been published in English). It is available here.
The second is a review that appeared in the T.L.S. on January 8. The book is a high-quality synthetic history of Portugal and the Portuguese empire in the early modern period. It is available to subscribers on the T.L.S. site.

Publication of Enlightened Reform in Southern Europe and its Atlantic Colonies, c. 1750-1830
I am very pleased to announce that the volume that I had the honor of editing has just appeared in print. Enlightened Reform in Southern Europe and its Atlantic Colonies, c. 1750-1830
is now available from Ashgate. There are links on the Ashgate webpage to my introduction as well as the Table of Contents.
The volume appears almost exactly two years after the contributors convened at Trinity College, Cambridge to discuss the themes which are now available to a wider audience in book form. Details about the December 2007 conference are available here.
