2 new publications

It has been a busy yet enjoyable summer in Cambridge, MA. Two of my pieces were published in the last month or so. The first is a review of J.R. McNeill's Mosquito Empires which appeared in the T.L.S. The second is an article concerning Portuguese debates on empire after the independence of Brazil (covering the period 1820-1850). This article may be found in the Fall 2011 issue of the Journal of Colonialism and Colonial History.

Enlightened Reform volume profiled in the Harvard Gazette

I'm delighted to report that the volume I recently edited, Enlightened Reform in Southern Europe and its Atlantic Colonies, c. 1750-1830 (Ashgate, Dec. 2009), was profiled in the Harvard Gazette on June 1. The link to the article is available here. The book may be purchased here.

First post of the year

I've been slow to maintain this site, but I've resolved to be more diligent in 2010.

I only have two new articles to mention.

The first is a review of an excellent new, accessible biography of Salazar (the first quality biography to have been published in English). It is available here.

The second is a review that appeared in the T.L.S. on January 8. The book is a high-quality synthetic history of Portugal and the Portuguese empire in the early modern period. It is available to subscribers on the T.L.S. site.
