I am delighted that I'll attend and give a plenary lecture at a conference on Liberalism in the Americas at the University of Leicester in July 2013. It is part of a larger project, based at the Institute for the Study of the Americas (London).

Connections After Colonialism: Europe and Latin America in the 1820s

I am pleased to announce that Connections after Colonialism: Europe and Latin America in the 1820s, which I've co-edited with Dr. Matthew Brown of the University of Bristol, will be published by the University of Alabama Press by the end of this year (it is presently in page proof stage). The book emerges from the "Re-thinking the 1820s" symposium that Dr. Brown and I co-organized in May 2009. Additional essays on the topic may be found in the special issue of European History Quarterly we guest-edited in July 2011.

I am spending the Fall 2011 semester at the John Carter Brown Library in Providence, RI on a N.E.H. Fellowship.

History Today

I'm very excited that my article on early 19th-century Luso-Brazilian history has been published in the June 2011 issue of History Today. I enjoyed writing the piece and I had the good fortune of giving an early version of it in February as a public lecture at Wesleyan University, my alma mater. The article in History Today is entitled "Empire of Exceptions: The Making of Modern Brazil".
